This workshop will examine the DSM-5 criteria for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). We will explore the nuances between “appropriately” using a substance vs. abusing and depending on a substance. We will focus on alcohol, marijuana, and prescription medications in understanding how to properly assess our clients for SUD treatment needs, co-occurring complications, and referral.
- Gain an understanding of commonly abused substances and their effects.
- Discern use of substances that warrant a diagnosis.
- Become aware of complications when dealing with co-morbid disorders.
- Identify their limits of ethical practice and the process of referral to a higher level of care for SUDs.
