How Does Spiritual Direction Differ from Chaplaincy?
Spiritual Direction shares some skills and focus with the work of chaplains. Both emphasize a sense of immediate presence, and attention to the here-and-now. A foundation of listening, and honoring the perspective of the person being served is also common.
A primary difference would be the intention and duration of the relationship. Often a person will work with a chaplain in a time of crisis or duress, and the relationship ends shortly thereafter. Choosing to work with a director however, can last many years, and gain the depth and intimacy of an enduring relationship.
