Clergy and Congregational Care

God’s daughters and sons occasionally experience life’s challenges with inadequate support. Congregations at their best strive to respond to human anguish with caring ministry grounded in God’s unbounded compassion.

The Care and Counseling Center offers workshops to support the mission of congregations by equipping rabbis, priests, pastors, ministers, and laypersons to provide this congregational care ministry to persons in need. We believe the training of clergy and laypersons must be ongoing because congregational care (or pastoral care) is an art and not a simple method that can be memorized. Congregations need and deserve leaders with enhanced skills, deeper knowledge, and solidified identities — all of which require life-long learning.

A variety of workshops are available to assist you in your commitment to serve with increased effectiveness and confidence. We invite you to explore the option appropriate for your needs.

Clergy Training Program

As a pastor, priest, or rabbi, when emergencies arise — death, critical injury, marital conflict, violence — you often arrive first. Demonstrating strength, kindness and ultimately God’s love, you’re sought out by members of your congregation to provide comfort and wisdom in a time when others cannot.

While it’s an honor and a privilege, the responsibility that comes with your calling needs to be nurtured and developed. Even for pastors, being with people in deep pain is never easy. Let us help you become a more confident pastor, enhancing your skills in responding to these situations.

The Care and Counseling Center’s Clergy Training Programs strengthen participants in the art of spiritual care. We offer courses to sharpen your skills and deepen your understanding so you can provide effective ministry. The programs are led by congregational care consultants Rev. Dr. Carol Pitts, Rev. Dr. Bob Gary, Rev. Dr. Skip Johnson, and Rev. Dr. Marshall Bruner.

Available workshops include:

  • Supervising Caregivers: The Art of Maximizing Ministry
  • Leadership Enhancement for Local Clergy
  • Integrating Effective Pastoral Care Across Cultures
  • Leadership and Self-Care

Workshops in Congregation Care for Laypersons

From hospital visits to spontaneous conversations, this program enhances the ministry of laypersons who provide spiritual and emotional support to parishioners. The program consists of a series of workshops, Refining the Art of Congregational Care; Called by God to Serve, spanning four weeks. Workshops are led by Congregational Care Consultants Rev. Dr. Bob Gary, Rev. Dr. Marshall Bruner, and Rev. Dr. Carol Pitts.

Our transformative approach trains individuals to become effective caregivers. Participants gain knowledge and skill, become more self-confident, solidify their identity as a lay minister and experience a spiritual renewal. If you would like to make a decisive contribution to the life of your church and to the lives of many hurting individuals, our Layperson Training Program is the right fit for you.
